Commercial Auto Insurance

Commercial auto covers the vehicles your coating business owns, leases, or uses — mobile spray rigs, service trucks, and company vehicles — for liability, physical damage, and the equipment they carry on the road.

Commercial Auto for Coating Shops

If your shop owns or operates vehicles to run mobile coating jobs, pick up and deliver customer vehicles, or haul materials, you need commercial auto insurance. Personal auto policies exclude business use, and a single at-fault accident in a loaded service truck can generate a serious liability claim.

What's Covered

  • Auto liability: Bodily injury and property damage you cause in a covered vehicle
  • Physical damage: Collision and comprehensive on your trucks and vans
  • Mobile rig coverage: Vehicles outfitted with spray equipment for on-site jobs
  • Hired & non-owned auto: Liability when employees drive rented or personal vehicles for work
  • Medical payments / PIP: Injury costs for drivers and passengers
  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist: Protection when the other driver isn't covered

Coating-Shop Considerations

  • Mobile spray rigs: Trucks built out with proportioners and generators carry both auto and equipment exposure
  • Customer-vehicle transport: Test drives and moving customer trucks have their own considerations (and tie into garagekeepers)
  • Driver management: MVR checks and a fleet safety program lower rates

Pairing With Your Other Coverage

Commercial auto handles the road; garagekeepers handles customer vehicles in your care; general liability handles premises and operations. Because auto claims can be severe, many shops extend their auto limits with a commercial umbrella.

Auto liability (bodily injury & property)

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I insure my shop's service truck on a personal auto policy?

No. Personal auto policies exclude business and commercial use. Vehicles your shop owns or uses for mobile coating jobs, pickups, deliveries, or moving materials must be on a commercial auto policy — and employees driving their own cars for work should be covered by hired-and-non-owned auto.

Is my mobile spray rig covered by commercial auto?

The vehicle itself is covered by commercial auto for liability and physical damage, but the spray equipment mounted in or on it is usually scheduled under your commercial property/inland marine coverage. We coordinate the two so the rig and its equipment are both fully protected.
